On a December evening, a Christmas village appears in the middle of Seoul. A few minutes’ walk away, paper lanterns start glowing along the Cheonggyecheon stream. And on the plaza in front of City Hall, a skating rink opens for about a dollar an hour.
Here’s the bottom line: the easiest way to enjoy Seoul Christmas 2026 is to walk from Gwanghwamun to Cheonggyecheon in a single evening, then finish at Seoul Plaza if you still have energy.
These sites sit close together, and the Gwanghwamun Market, the Lantern Festival and Seoul Light Gwanghwamun are all expected to overlap from December 11 to January 3. This guide covers the confirmed 2026 dates, an hour-by-hour route based on how things ran last year, and an indoor backup plan for freezing or rainy nights.

Seoul Christmas 2026 at a Glance
Here’s the lineup in one table. Some details haven’t been announced yet.
| Event | Location | Dates | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gwanghwamun Market | Gwanghwamun Square and Sejongno Park area | Dec 4 (Fri) – Jan 3 (Sun), 31 days | Free |
| Seoul Lantern Festival | Cheonggyecheon area, Gwanghwamun Square and more | Dec 11 (Fri) – Jan 31 (Sun) | Check official announcement |
| Seoul Light Gwanghwamun | Gwanghwamun Square area | December, details TBA | Check official announcement |
| Seoul Plaza Skating Rink | Seoul Plaza | December, details TBA | 1,000 won per hour (last season) |
| The Hyundai Seoul Christmas | 5th floor “Sounds Forest,” The Hyundai Seoul | Nov 10 (Tue) – Dec 31 (Thu) | Check official announcement |
Two things stand out.
First, the Gwanghwamun Market starts on December 4 and the Lantern Festival on December 11. From December 11 to January 3, both are running at once, so you can see the market and the lanterns on the same night.
Second, this year’s Lantern Festival runs until January 31. Last year it ended on January 4, so it’s about four weeks longer. If you’re visiting Seoul in January, you can still catch some of the holiday glow.

Gwanghwamun Market: A Christmas Village in the Middle of Seoul
The Gwanghwamun Market is a European-style Christmas village built in Gwanghwamun Square, with booths run by small local businesses. It’s one of Seoul’s best-known year-end events. This year it runs from December 4 to January 3, and it’s free to enter.
What It Looked Like Last Year
This year’s program hasn’t been released. So here’s what the Seoul city government announced for last year’s market (December 12–31, 2025):
- A 15-meter Christmas tree
- A Rudolph carousel and more than 10 photo spots
- A stamp tour: collect stamps in a stamp book from the village information center, and finish it for limited-edition goods and a carousel ride ticket
- Hands-on booths such as Christmas postcard writing and mini tree making
- A handicraft market from small businesses, plus a food zone
Food was served in reusable containers that you returned after eating. Check on site whether the same system is used this year.
What Are the Gwanghwamun Market Hours?
Last year it ran from 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM, and stayed open until midnight on December 31. Closing time was also extended by 30 minutes when crowds grew. The 2026 hours haven’t been announced yet, so please check Seoul’s official announcement before you go.
How Crowded Does It Get?
Last year, about 3.57 million people visited. Expect similar or bigger crowds this year. A weekday early evening, around sunset (about 5:30 PM), is much more relaxed than a weekend night.
Getting There
It connects directly to Gwanghwamun Station on Seoul Subway Line 5. Roads around Gwanghwamun get jammed in December and parking is hard, so public transit is the better choice.
Seoul Lantern Festival: Walking Cheonggyecheon Under Paper Lanterns
The Seoul Lantern Festival is one of Seoul’s signature winter light festivals, where traditional hanji (Korean paper) lanterns and media art line the Cheonggyecheon stream. This year it runs from December 11 to January 31, in the Cheonggyecheon area, Gwanghwamun Square and more.
How It’s Laid Out
Last year, the route ran from Cheonggye Plaza to Samil Bridge, split into 4 zones, each with a different theme. This year’s layout hasn’t been announced. If it follows the same pattern, you’ll start at Cheonggye Plaza and walk downstream, watching the mood change from zone to zone.
Hours and Admission
Last year it closed at 10 PM, then extended to 11 PM when crowds grew. This year’s hours and admission haven’t been announced. Please confirm on the official announcement before you go.
Getting There
You can walk to Cheonggye Plaza from Gwanghwamun Station (Line 5) or Jonggak Station (Line 1). The walk from Gwanghwamun Square to Cheonggye Plaza is short, so it’s easy to continue on foot after the market.

Seoul Light Gwanghwamun: Media Art With Light and Music
Seoul Light Gwanghwamun is a media art show of light and music in Gwanghwamun Square. Detailed dates are expected to be announced sometime in December.
For reference, Seoul’s official events page currently lists December 11 to January 3, 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM, with a Gwanghwamun media façade show, citizen programs and a New Year countdown. That schedule may still change before it’s finalized, so recheck once the official announcement comes out.
If it starts the same day as the Lantern Festival, as listed, then from December 11 on you can see the market, the lanterns and the media art in one trip.
Seoul Plaza Skating Rink: City-Center Skating for 1,000 Won
The Seoul Plaza skating rink is a winter rink in front of City Hall that cost just 1,000 won per hour last season. This year’s opening date and hours are expected to be announced in December.
What to Know in Advance (Based on Last Season)
Until the 2026 details come out, the 2025–26 season rules are a useful guide:
- Price: 1,000 won per one-hour session, with skate and helmet rental included.
- Tickets: Half were sold online (seoulskate.kr/ticket) and half on site. Each session had 300 tickets, and online booking opened 7 days before the visit date.
- Weather: If a session was canceled for weather, ticket holders were notified by text message.
- Foreign visitors: Discover Seoul Pass (DSP) holders could skate for free.
If online tickets sell out, try the on-site tickets. Half of all tickets were sold on site, so arriving early gives you a real chance. Check again once the opening is announced to see whether the same system applies.

A Rainy-Day Backup: Christmas at The Hyundai Seoul
If it’s freezing or raining, or you arrive in November before the outdoor events start, The Hyundai Seoul is the comfortable option. This year, from November 10 to December 31, its indoor garden “Sounds Forest” on the 5th floor is decorated for Christmas.
This year’s spaces include:
- Santa’s House
- Letter Workshop
- Wrapping Workshop
- Gift Workshop
- Haeri Shop (해리상점)
If you land in Seoul in late November or early December, this is the first place you can feel the Christmas mood before the Gwanghwamun events begin. The Hyundai Seoul is in Yeouido, near Yeouido Station (Lines 5 and 9). Please check hours and entry rules in the official announcement before you visit.
The One-Night Route
After December 11, on a weekday evening, this order lets you see everything without rushing. The times below are an example based on last year’s hours.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| About 5:00 PM | Arrive at Gwanghwamun Station and enter the market as the sun sets |
| 5:30 – 6:30 PM | Explore the market (stamp tour, photo spots, a light snack) |
| 6:30 – 8:00 PM | Walk to Cheonggye Plaza and stroll the Lantern Festival |
| After 8:00 PM | Return to Gwanghwamun Square for Seoul Light media art (once confirmed) |
| If you have energy left | Seoul Plaza skating rink (check hours once it opens) |
There’s one reason for this order. The market is quieter around sunset, lanterns look better as it gets darker, and media art shows up best after full dark.
If it’s too cold or rainy, you can switch the same day’s plan to Christmas at The Hyundai Seoul.
Pre-Trip Checklist
- Pack warm gear first. The squares are windy, so it feels much colder than the forecast. Hand warmers, a scarf and gloves help.
- Go on a weekday early evening. About 3.57 million people visited last year. Weekend nights are the busiest.
- Take the subway. Roads near Gwanghwamun are congested in December and parking is difficult.
- Recheck details once announced. Seoul Light Gwanghwamun and the skating rink are due to be announced in December, and hours are adjusted year to year. For questions, you can call the Seoul Dasan Call Center at 120 (02-120).
Plan Your Night in Gwanghwamun This Winter
Because these events are within walking distance, one evening out can cover the market, the lanterns and the media art. Pick a weekday after December 11, and save this guide’s timetable. For events that need tickets, like the skating rink, check as soon as the opening is announced.
If you go, leave a comment with your favorite spot or an extra tip. It helps the next traveler. When new details are announced, I’ll update this post.
