Based on Seoul’s standard taxi fare structure: standard taxis charge ₩4,800 for the first 1.6km, then ₩100 per 131m after that (₩100 per 109m during night hours, since the meter runs faster then). Night surcharge (22:00–04:00) is 20% from 22:00–23:00 and 02:00–04:00, and 40% from 23:00–02:00 — Seoul’s busiest and most expensive window. Leaving Seoul’s city limits adds a further 20%, which can stack with the night surcharge for up to 60% total. Deluxe/large taxis start at ₩7,000 for 3km with a flat 20% night surcharge and no 40% tier. This is an estimate — actual meters also add time-based charges when stuck in slow traffic, and fares in other cities (Busan, Incheon, etc.) follow different base fares and surcharge schedules.

Why Your Seoul Taxi Ride Home at Midnight Costs So Much More

If you’ve ever taken a taxi home from Hongdae or Gangnam around midnight and been surprised by the fare, there’s a specific reason: Seoul’s night surcharge isn’t a flat rate — it actually gets more expensive during the busiest hours.

How it works: the night surcharge runs from 22:00 to 04:00, but it’s tiered:

  • 22:00–23:00 and 02:00–04:00: 20% surcharge
  • 23:00–02:00: 40% surcharge — the most expensive window, and also usually when it’s hardest to catch a taxi

On top of that, if your trip crosses outside Seoul’s city limits (into Gyeonggi-do, for example), a further 20% surcharge applies — and it stacks with the night surcharge, for up to 60% total in the worst case.

Base fare: standard taxis start at ₩4,800 for the first 1.6km, then add roughly ₩100 per 131m after that (the meter increments faster at night, at every 109m instead).

How to use it:

  1. Choose standard or deluxe/large taxi.
  2. Enter your estimated trip distance.
  3. Enter your departure time.
  4. Check the box if your trip leaves Seoul’s city limits.
  5. See your estimated fare, with the exact surcharge breakdown.

A simple money-saving tip: if your trip falls right around 23:00, leaving 15–20 minutes earlier or later can sometimes mean the difference between a 20% and a 40% surcharge.
