If you only visit Starfield Library in Suwon, you’ll have half a day left over with nothing to do. The library’s 22-meter bookshelves are worth the trip for a photo, but that’s really all it offers on its own.
The better move is to shoot your photos at the library, then walk through Hwaseong Haenggung Palace and the fortress wall, and — if your timing lines up — cap the night off with a light festival. Here’s how the pieces fit into one route: the real photo spots inside the library, then the palace, the fortress wall, and the 2026 night festivals.
Inside the Library: The Photo Spots Most People Miss
The first thing that catches your eye is the 4th-floor main entrance. It gives you the full view of the bookshelves stretching up to the 7th floor, so almost everyone shoots their first photo here. The problem is that this angle has been photographed so many times it no longer stands out.
The real sweet spot is the Grand Staircase in the center.
Sitting on the tiered seating that runs from the 4th to the 7th floor and shooting upward fills your frame with bookshelves in a way COEX simply can’t match. Because the silhouettes of people sitting on the steps get pulled into the shot too, the photo has much more depth.
The second spot worth seeking out is the LP Cafe on the 5th floor.
For the price of one drink (18,500 won), you get headphones, a vinyl record, and a view of the entire library through floor-to-ceiling glass. Photos taken from this angle tend to get noticeably more engagement on social media, and it’s a composition you simply can’t get from inside the library itself.
The best time to visit is right at opening on a weekday morning (10–11 AM). Weekend afternoons see a constant stream of people, which makes it hard to claim a spot on the upper steps.
Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, a 20-Minute Walk Away

From Starfield Library Suwon, Hwaseong Haenggung Palace is about a 15–20 minute walk. It was the temporary palace where King Jeongjo stayed while building Hwaseong Fortress, and it’s one of the best-preserved examples of late-Joseon palace architecture.
Pass through the main gate, Sinpungnu, and you’ll find an open courtyard surrounded by traditional wooden buildings. Locals out for a walk outnumber tourists here, which makes it far easier to shoot unhurried photos than at the library.
The Hwaseong Fortress Wall: Pick a Section That Fits Your Time

Stopping at Haenggung Palace means you’ve only seen half of Hwaseong Fortress. The wall itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its full circumference runs about 5.7 kilometers. Walking the entire loop takes 2–3 hours, so it’s more realistic to choose a section that matches how much time you have.
Janganmun Gate is the main gate and, thanks to its sheer scale, a popular photo spot in its own right. Heading west from there along the wall brings you to Hwaseomun Gate, and continuing further up takes you near the summit of Paldalsan Mountain to Seojangdae, the best viewpoint for a panorama of downtown Suwon. Arrive around sunset and you can catch the fortress wall glowing against the evening sky.

If you’re not up for the climb, the Hwahongmun–Banghwasuryujeong section is a good alternative. This short stretch follows Suwoncheon Stream, and the pavilion and floodgate together make for an easy, low-effort photo walk.
| Route | Distance / Time | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Full wall circuit | ~5.7 km, 2–3 hrs | Moderate–Hard |
| Janganmun–Hwaseomun–Seojangdae | ~2 km, 1 hr | Moderate |
| Hwahongmun–Banghwasuryujeong | ~1 km, 30 min | Easy |
2026 Suwon Hwaseong Media Art & Heritage Night
If you’re visiting Suwon in autumn, it’s worth planning separate day and night itineraries. Two major night events are scheduled for 2026, and if your timing works out, you can combine the library, the palace, and a light festival all in one trip.
Suwon Hwaseong Media Art 2026
Suwon Hwaseong Media Art 2026 runs from September 19 to October 6, 2026, at Hwaseomun Gate and the Janganmun area, and admission is free. This season’s theme is “Saebit Dongnak” (New Light, Shared Joy), and no advance reservation is needed — walk-in viewing is available throughout the run. Since the fortress wall itself becomes the canvas for the projections, the route overlaps almost exactly with the Janganmun–Hwaseomun walk described above. Walking the same stretch again at night, after seeing it in daylight, gives you a completely different view of the same wall.
| period | 2026. 9. 19. ~ 10. 6. |
|---|---|
| location | Area around Hwaseomun Gate Jangan Park Janganmun Gate |
| operate | 18:00 ~ 22:00 |

Suwon Heritage Night 2026
Suwon Heritage Night 2026, marking its 10th edition under the theme “The Tenth Night: Suwon Yeonhyang,” runs across Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion, Hwahongmun Gate, the Suwoncheon Stream area, Haenggung Plaza, and the area around Paldalmun Gate, with eight different night culture programs. It opened in mid-August, so it’s worth checking the Suwon Cultural Foundation’s official site shortly before your visit to confirm exact dates and program times.
Hwaseong Haenggung Palace Night Opening
- date : 8. 14. ~ 8. 30. Every Friday–Sunday and public holidays: 18:00–21:30 (Last admission at 21:00)

Weekends during the Media Art run tend to draw large crowds. The best photo spots typically fill up about 30 minutes before each screening starts, so it’s worth arriving early.

Exit Haenggung Palace and you’re right at the edge of Haenggung-dong’s cafe street.
Suggested Day Plan
| Time | Activity |

| 11:00–11:30 AM | Walk to Haenggung Palace |
| 11:30 AM–1:00 PM | Hwaseong Haenggung Palace + fortress wall walk |

Pre-Visit Checklist
- Starfield Library Suwon is free, open 10:00 AM–10:00 PM
- Walk to the library from Hwaseo Station via the underground passage
- Bring comfortable shoes — the fortress wall route has uphill stretches
- Night festivals are seasonal (September–October) — reconfirm exact dates on the official site before visiting
- Parking is limited around most Haenggung-dong cafes; public transit is recommended
Coming for the library alone would mean missing most of what Suwon has to offer. Grab your photo, walk the fortress wall, and if your timing lines up with the festivals, close the night out under a wash of projected light — Suwon isn’t a half-day stop, it’s a full day.
