Changdeokgung Palace and Huwon Garden · 창덕궁과 후원

Built in 1405 as a secondary palace to Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung served as the Joseon dynasty's main royal residence for over 270 years and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for its harmonious integration with the natural landscape. Its rear garden, Huwon, features picturesque pavilions and ponds scattered across four valleys—including Buyongji, Aeryeonji, Gwallamji, and Ongnyucheon—where royals once relaxed, composed poetry, and held ceremonies. It remains one of the finest examples of Korean palace architecture that favors natural beauty over artificial grandeur.

1405년 경복궁의 이궁으로 지어진 창덕궁은 270여 년간 조선의 실질적인 법궁 역할을 했던 곳으로, 자연 지형을 살린 배치 덕분에 가장 한국적인 궁궐로 평가받아 1997년 유네스코 세계유산에 등재되었습니다. 특히 후원에는 부용지, 애련지, 관람지, 옥류천 등 골짜기마다 아름다운 정자와 연못이 자리해 왕실의 휴식과 다채로운 행사가 펼쳐졌던 흔적을 만날 수 있습니다. 화려한 인공미보다 자연과의 조화를 추구한 궁궐 건축의 진수를 느낄 수 있는 곳입니다.
