Janganmun is the northern main gate of Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, once used by the king as the formal entrance when traveling from Hanyang to Suwon. Built in 1794 and rebuilt in 1978 after wartime destruction, the gate still bears visible traces of the Korean War on its walls. Larger than Seoul's Sungnyemun Gate and sharing a similar design, it stands out for its added defensive structures like the horseshoe-shaped outer wall and watchtowers.
